APPENDIX is a worm-like, narrow pouch that projects from the large intestine.
Inflammation or infection of the appendix is called Appendicitis.
Surgery performed to remove the failing appendix is called Appendectomy.

What is Appendicitis?
APPENDIX is situated on the lower right side of the abdomen.
It has no function (yet known), its inflammation or infection needs treatment immediately.
Inflammation of the appendix may cause pain on and off. It might burst or rupture leading to sudden and severe pain. This requires immediate treatment.

CAUSES:

  • Abdominal trauma or injury
  • Infection in the digestive tract
  • Growth inside the appendix
  • Blockage at the opening where the appendix is connected with the intestine
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

 

 

SYMPTOMS:

Firstly, you will feel pain in the lower right side of the abdomen. These symptoms will get worse which include :
 Swollen belly
Tenderness or pain which hurts more while coughing, sneezing or moving.

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Inability to pass gas
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mild fever below 100 degrees F

 


DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT :
 

Primarily a physical examination is done by the doctor followed by blood tests as suggested by them.

Following tests are also done :
?      CT Scan
?      Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
?      Ultrasound of abdomen

MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT:

Commonly a surgery is done known as Appendectomy. It leaves no chance of the spread of infection.
Depending upon the condition of your appendix following procedures can be performed:

  •       Open surgery
  •       Laparoscopic surgery

Common complications that occur are:
  •       Sepsis
  •       Abdominal infection
  •       Abscess

 

 


PREVENTION:

Appendicitis can occur in any person and according to the experts there is no proven way to prevent it.

Eating a high fibre diet, high amount of fruits and vegetables might help a little.

  •      The severity of the disease
  •      Technology used
  •      Pre-existing medical ailments
  •      Other medical complications like diabetes, anaemia, etc.
