Hydrocele is the swelling of the scrotum in males. It occurs when fluid enters the scrotum of adult and infant males. This fluid is collected between the thin sheath surrounding the testicles.

IT IS MORE COMMONLY SEEN IN INFANT MALES THAN ADULTS.

WHAT IS HYDROCELE?
It is an accumulation of fluids, in the scrotum in males.
(PIC)
COMMONLY SEEN IN INFANT MALES THAN IN ADULTS. IT OCCURS ONLY IN 1% OF THE ADULT MALE POPULATION WHEREAS 10% IN INFANT MALES.

SYMPTOMS:
?    The scrotum is ENLARGED.
?    Swelling in the Testicles.
?    Mild pain in testicles.
?    Discomfort in sitting position.

CAUSES:
It occurs due to injury or inflammation within the scrotum. Inflammation might occur due to infection in the testicles or in the epididymis.
There are two: communicating hydrocele and non-communicating hydrocele.
?    Communicating hydrocele: This is a type of hydrocele that has contact with the fluids of the abdominal cavity. A communicating hydrocele is caused by the failure of the processus vaginalis. If this membrane remains open, there is a potential for both a hernia and a hydrocele to develop. The child’s scrotum will appear swollen or large and may change in size throughout the day.
?    Non-communicating hydrocele: Here the inguinal canal does close, but there is still extra fluid around the testicle in the scrotum. It  might be present at birth or might develop years later for no obvious reason. A non-communicating hydrocele usually remains the same size or has very slow growth.

MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT:
There are no medications available to treat hydrocele.
Hydrocele does not require surgical treatment usually and goes away on its own within six to twelve months of age.
In the case of adults, it requires surgical intervention.
If you are suffering from hydrocele, consultation from a surgeon is necessary. Some tests are also done after the clinical examination by the doctor.
COST ESTIMATE: The cost of the treatment depends on the following:
?    Condition of the patient
?    The severity of the disease
?    Technology used
?    Pre-existing medical ailments
?    Other medical complications like diabetes, anaemia, etc.
An exact estimate can only be given after consultation.
