A Hernia occurs when there is a protrusion of an organ through the wall, which contains it. It occurs through a weak spot in the muscle or tissue.
There are various types of hernia such as:
?    Inguinal Hernia
?    Femoral hernia
?    Umbilical Hernia
?    Hiatal Hernia
?    Ventral Hernia
Having Hernia is a concern and you should act upon it.
CAUSES:
Different Hernias have different causes.
?    Inguinal Hernia: Occurs due to the pushing of the intestines through a weakened spot in the lower abdominal wall, commonly through the inguinal canal. It is mostly seen in males as the testicles descend through the inguinal canal shortly after birth. There are  two types of Inguinal Hernias:
o    Indirect Inguinal Hernia- It is common in children and young adults. It is generally acquired or congenital.
o    Direct Inguinal Hernia- It is common in elderly adult males as the abdominal muscles in them are weak.
?    Femoral Hernia: Occurs due to protrusion of the abdominal contents through the femoral canal. It is present as a globular swelling in the groin. It is more commonly seen in females as the width of the femoral canal is larger in them due to the wider pelvis.
?    Umbilical Hernia: Occurs due to protrusion of the intestines through the umbilicus due to weakness of the umbilical scar. More common in children and babies. A bulge is observed near the belly button.
?    Hiatal Hernia: Occurs due to protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragm into your chest cavity. More common in people over the age of 50.
?    Ventral Hernia: Occurs when tissue bulges out through the opening in the muscle in your abdomen. You'll notice that the size of the ventral hernia decreases when you lie down. Sometimes a hernia might develop at the site of the surgical incision called the Incisional Hernia.
This mainly occurs due to weakness of the muscles or strain that can lead to hernia:
?    Congenital condition
?    Damage in an injury or surgery
?    Chronic coughing
?    Pregnancy
?    Constipation
?    Obesity
?    Lifting heavyweights

SYMPTOMS: Commonly a bulge or a lump is seen in the abdominal or the groin region which might disappear when you are lying down. This lump or bulge will reoccur during coughing, laughing, crying or straining during bowel movement. Following are some more symptoms:
•    Bulge or swelling in the groin region
•    Pain at the site of the bulge
•    Pain while lifting objects
•    Increment in the size of the bulge
•    A sense of feeling full or signs of bowel movements
Incase of Hiatal Hernias no bulges are observed, but heartburn, indigestion, difficulty in swallowing, frequent regurgitation and chest pain is felt.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTS:
Primarily a physical examination is done by the doctor and further suggests some tests which include:
•    Abdominal Ultrasound
•    Abdominal CT Scan
•    Abdominal MRI Scan
•    X-Ray of the digestive tract
•    Endoscopy

MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT:
If you are having a hernia, you should consult the doctor as soon as possible as it will grow and cause more pain with time. Mostly hernia is treated via surgeries which are done in the following ways:
•    Open Surgery
•    Laparoscopic surgery
•    Robotic surgery
Each type of surgery has advantages and disadvantages, but the best for you will be decided by our doctor.

RECOVERY TIME: The time of recovery will depend on the type of surgery and you may experience slight pain at the site of surgery. You should keep in touch with the doctor during this time.

COST ESTIMATE:
The cost of laparoscopic surgery depends on the following factor
?    Technology used
?    Condition of patient and severeness of the case.
?    Any other pre-existing medical condition
?    Any other medical complications like diabetes, anaemia, thyroid, obesity, etc.
The best cost estimation can be provided only after clinical consultation done by the doctor.
